The Ultra Clean® core of the Air Sentry range
Every Air Sentry installation starts with one of two units. The Air Sentry Wall Unit (ASW) is a fixed, wall-mounted unit. The Air Sentry Belfast Unit (ASB) is a mobile unit on a floor-standing frame. Both use the same Ultra Clean® filtration and fan design, so you choose between them on the room and how you use it, not on performance. Either one can work alone, or sit alongside Genesis®, Aristotle® and the positive and negative pressure units in a wider ventilation strategy.
Two formats, one filtration system
The Air Sentry Wall is the preferred choice for permanent installations. Its wall-mounted format keeps the vents clear and the floor free. The Air Sentry Belfast is useful where a space changes use, where equipment has to move between rooms, or where cover is needed quickly. Both units are easy to deploy and cause minimal disruption to a working ward.
An optional plenum attachment connects either unit to an existing HVAC system without creating back pressure.
Ultra Clean® filtration
Each unit uses a cartridge filter system built to EN14644 part 3. It has three stages: a pre-filter, activated carbon, and a ULPA 15 filter medium. The cartridge carries a guaranteed filter life of 24 months. Each unit can contribute to both standard air changes per hour (ACH) and equivalent air changes (eACH), and it supports a maintenance regime based on verification and testing.
The units are suitable for ICU, isolation and aerosol-generating procedure areas, as part of a compliant or risk-assessed ventilation strategy.
Designed around NETB 2023/01A and HTM 03-01
In May 2023, NHS England published Estates Technical Bulletin NETB 2023/01A as an addendum to HTM 03-01. It recognises HEPA air cleaning devices in healthcare spaces and allows eACH to supplement a ventilation system that is underperforming. Its main expectations are:
- filters should last more than 12 months
- devices must be designed so that nothing can be placed on top of them to cover the vents
- electrical wiring must comply with BS 7671:2018+A3:2024
- secondary technologies such as ionisation are not advised
- filter changes must be carried out by a designated competent person, with verification
The bulletin is clear that eACH does not replace the minimum fresh air or pressure regime requirements of HTM 03-01. The ASW and ASB are designed to complement existing ventilation, not to replace it.
Where they fit
Interim cover for failing or delayed plant. If an air handling unit fails HTM 03-01 verification, or refurbishment is delayed, the units can raise performance quickly. With clean air supply and extract, they support air change rates and directional airflow so the room can stay in clinical use while capital works progress.
Infectious disease and isolation. Used with negative pressure and HEPA air cleaning, they support containment in infectious disease areas, respiratory assessment units and isolation rooms. Aristotle® monitoring adds differential pressure indication and a ventilation response triggered by air quality.
Protective environments. Used with positive pressure and high-efficiency filtration, they help protect vulnerable and immunocompromised patients in haematology, oncology and isolation settings, as part of a compliant or risk-assessed strategy.
Demand-led control. Paired with Aristotle®, the units can follow occupancy, clinical activity and air quality readings, increasing fan speed only when needed to save energy.
Evidence in use
In 2020, Nottingham University Hospitals assessed the Air Sentry Mobile System with a laboratory-grade particle counter and smoke visualisation. The tests ran first in an unused research room and then in an endoscopy suite during a list of four patients involving aerosol-generating procedures. The system was reported to bring the room air quickly to an ultra clean level and keep it there during the procedures, with smoke pulled downwards and away from faces. The trust later deployed 200 units across two hospital sites.
